Traffic Offenses
Almost every driver has faced a traffic violation of some nature. These offenses can range from simple speeding tickets to felony offenses with jail time on the line. All of these charges are serious, though, as they will all affect your insurance rates, driving record, and can include penalties ranging from fines to jail times. Any charge on your driving record can also affect your insurance rates, and some serious offenses can even prompt your carrier to drop you completely.

You may not know all of the options available to you or how to choose the best one, but we can keep you informed about North Carolina's laws so you can feel confident during your defense process.  The right attorney may make all the difference in the outcome of your case. North Carolina's Point System
North Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles uses a point-based system to track the traffic violations committed by an individual. Every offense leads to points being added to your driving record. When a person accrues 12 points, they face a license suspension of up to 60 days. Within the next three years, if another 8 points are gained the license will be suspended again for up to 6 months, with a third suspension lasting up to 12 months.

The number of points added to a license varies depending on the offense. Here are some examples of the point values of offenses:

  • Running a stop sign - 3 points
  • No liability insurance - 3 points
  • Failure to stop for a siren - 3 points
  • Failure to yield to a pedestrian - 4 points
  • Hit and run with property damage only - 4 points
  • Aggressive driving - 5 points
